‘Musk’ VOD release date moved up to November 6.

The Hollywood Reporter reported Monday that the VOD date has been pushed up to November 6 from its original intended window of Nov 24.

The initial 4 screen theatrical limited release was met with full theaters in Los Angeles and New York. I haven’t seen a theater this full since one of the Avengers movies, and the audience response in my screening was more animated than the last couple of Marvel and DC movies I’ve seen. The movie is a banger, and does not feel 4 hours long.

The length of the movie, however, makes it a hard sell in theaters, and the wider release by Bleecker Street is competing with the Elizabeth Holmes movie. So, it is only on 60 screens now, with that number declining.

Bleecker Street has recently been purchased by another billionaire, and with Elon investing in Skydance, there is some doubt about whether the HBO Max debut is going to happen as planned, so your best bet of seeing this will be on VOD platforms. Also, the pre-and post- intermission segments split the film nicely, so you can comfortably watch it in 2 installments.

The documentary is powerful and cutting enough to explain why Elon is applying pressure to bury it.

So far, Bleecker St. is reporting strong preorders for the VOD, and it’s a top 50 title on Apple’s VOD service already based on preorder volume.

See it while you can, even if you know much of this stuff already, it really pulls things together in a coherent fashion and suggests that we aren’t worried enough about Elon’s influence in tech and politics.

Angleref helps you get an angle on head drawing

There are a lot of cool, free, online tools for artists these days. Today I stumbled onto this one: https://angleref.com/?yaw=23&pitch=-14&roll=28

Angleref lets you rotate a 3D skull model into any angle (roll, pitch, and yaw), then searches for photos of people holding their head in that orientation. Very helpful if you’ve been struggling with difficult portrait angles.

‘Musk’ director interview with author of ‘Ludicrous’

I didn’t get up in time for the livestream this morning, but Ed Niedermeyer’s interview with director Alex Gibney is well worth watching.

Ed has been pioneering the use of ATProto-based tools to present his work. The ATProto that underlies Mastodon and BlueSky gives people a decentralized platform that can’t be shut down at the whims of big tech companies. Which is very relevant to this interview, as TikTok de-platformed the Musk documentary’s account just as it went into wider release in theaters.

A more diverse media ecosystem can only help offset the current corruption in corporate media.
